First the ‘SoBig’ virus and then the MSBlaster have been inflicted on the Internet, now it seems some of the “spam” messages offering Email Christmas Cards also contain a Trojan Horse virus. One wonders at the mentality of the people who design these programs.

I think some E-address books with my address on them must have been invaded as I have been receiving as many as 30 potential hits in one day. Fortunately these were all intercepted by my security program and quarantined but as several were repeated I think they may have come from different sources. I would urge anyone who has not already done so to install one of the programs which search your computer for any existing virus and screen against future contamination.

DNA Testing
Some members may remember that, some time ago, I tried to arrange test to establish whether or not the various forms of spelling Shard*low* could be traced back to a common ancestor. In the end only two samples were submitted which was not enough for a conclusive result although the indications were that we did not stem from one person. This is not the only use for DNA Testing, recent advances in preventive medicine have shown that it can be a useful tool in early detection of certain conditions. Members may be interested in a new service which offers a `Do it yourself’ kit for taking and preserving DNA samples for future use, alternatively a DNA Profile can be provided from a sample submitted. Further details can be obtained from the web site www.catgee.com (This link is no longer active.) As I understand it this would NOT be a `Y’ Line Profile as used for determining a common ancestor.

Strays
Marj. Cowie has been looking at a transcription of the records of “Kyneton Hospital Admissions” and came across Regina Shardalow aged 27, apparently these records are well known for their poor handwriting and the date of admission for this was not given so it is not possible to calculate her DoB but she is said to have been born in England. The records cover the period 1869-1884, so assuming her age is correct, she would have been born between 1842 and 1857, too late for the 1841 census and she is not on 1851, if anyone knows of a Regina Shardalow please let me know. Marj has suggested that this entry might have been an error in transcribing and the name should be Kezia, a member of Marj’s family who would fit these dates.Shardlow & Sons -- Australia

Australian Shardlows
Avril Marshall has obtained several photographs featuring members of her family who emigrated in the late 1880s, as is so often the case it is difficult to put names to faces but she is getting help from members of the family in Australia.

Update
Two marriages have been found in Boyd’s Marriage Index which may refer to the same groom, these are Alex Shardalow to An Willams at Beccles, Suffolk in 1690 and Alex Shardelo to Gra(ce) Mascall at Ardleigh, Essex in in 1695. I am assuming Alex is an abbreviation of Alexander, I have a record of an Alexander born in August 1633 at Bungay and, from a different source, a note that both Alexander and An were from Bungay If this is the Alex married in 1690 he would have been 57 at the time and I do not have a record a previous marriage but this would probably have been during the Civil War when many events were not recorded.

Future “Get Together”
Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, it will not be possible to arrange a meeting this year, instead I am suggesting that some members may wish to attend a conference being arranged by the Federation of Family History Societies from 26th to 30th August 2004. It is being held at Loughborough University which is very close to the village of Shardlow where the 2003 event was to have been held. A full program of lectures is being arranged, details can be obtained from the Internet at www.flightofyesterdays.co.uk (This site is not active.)

If members care to let me know their intention to attend I feel sure it will possible for them to meet other members during their stay and possibly arrange and evening “Gathering”.

As this will be the last newsletter this year may I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a successful New Year.
