A "J Shardelow" read Petrarch (Italian classical poet) at a school foundation commemoration. He would have been 12 and was born in Bermondsey and so seems the likeliest. The school would have been in Bermondsey Street in 1848 but that land was required by the railways in 1855. So presumably the school was located close to where the end of the London Bridge overground station platforms are and 200 metres from The Shard building (irony! could we pretend it was named after him?). Bermondsey Street is still there and goes under the railway through an overbridge. | ||
